Bloody Sunday

Scenes from the Saville Inquiry

Before that day, although people were being shot, I did not have a belief that death was an integral part of the equation of seeking justice in this country'

- Bernadette McAliskey

30 January 1972 in Derry. Thirteen unarmed civilians died after soldiers of the British Army’s Parachute Regiment opened fire on civil rights marchers in the Bogside area.

The day became known as Bloody Sunday.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the Abbey Theatre presents a reading of Bloody Sunday: Scenes from the Saville Inquiry, edited by journalist Richard Norton-Taylor.

The Saville Inquiry was the independent public inquiry set up to examine the events of Bloody Sunday. It became the longest inquiry in British legal history. This electric verbatim piece premiered in 2005 and distils four years of evidence into two hours of intense theatre.
